On Wednesday, AICF’s roving mammogram bus offering free screenings to New Yorkers was in Hell’s Kitchen partnering with Fountain House, a psycho-social clubhouse offering support to people with major mental illnesses. Founded in 1980, the AICF launched the mobile breast cancer screening program in 1987. “It’s rewarding to come to some of these places where women don’t even know that they should be getting a mammogram,” says Bernadette Quinn, a radiologic technologist on the mammogram screening bus. Founded in 1948, Fountain House is the pioneer of the clubhouse model, a community-based service dedicated to supporting and empowering people with mental illness that make up its membership. “The primary goal is to help people in their recovery,” says Smalls, who is the program director of the Wellness Unit at Fountain House.
