Santa Cruz climbing gym hosts club for people with Parkinson’s disease

SANTA CRUZ — Former Moss Landing Marine Laboratories professor Stacy Kim and former ER nurse Paula Mierau host a top rope climbing club for people with Parkinson’s at Pacific Edge Climbing Gym called Climb Out of Parkinson’s.
Despite the potential benefits, many people with Parkinson’s disease face barriers to exercise, particularly activities with a higher risk of falls.
But rope climbing with a harness, which catches climbers if they lose their placement on the wall, may remedy some of these concerns.
To climb safely, several people who facilitate the climbing club demonstrate and teach proper belaying and knot-tying techniques.
Pacific Edge Climbing Gym provides a discounted guest pass for people who want to join Climb Out of Parkinson’s on Saturday mornings.
