There were tears, and I feared we were nearing the tipping point of when good-intentioned motivation on my part could push him into resistance and even worse, resentment. I think about this tipping point a lot as I encourage my kids to try new things or see things through. Recognizing when it’s worth pushing them beyond that tipping point — when they become resistant to the challenge — is a regular dilemma for me. We’ve neared the tipping point many times, so much so that I’ve questioned my motivation and considered giving up more than once. I think the tipping point when it comes to skiing is behind us and it feels like a huge win.
