Yakima County is facing a big financial challenge as it prepares for the 2027 budget, with officials projecting a shortfall of more than $15 million—more than the county’s reserves can cover.
URGENT SOLUTIONS ON THE WAYThe Yakima County Commissioners announced that, while they successfully adopted a balanced budget for 2026, the county’s growing costs are outpacing revenues, calling for urgent "structural solutions" for the future.
To address the 2027 shortfall, the commissioners say they're proposing a series of seven Fiscal Accountability Measures aimed at controlling expenses and making sure the county stays on solid financial footing.
HERE COMES THE "SOLUTIONS"The measures include a freeze on all vacant positions, as layoffs are seen as too costly and disruptive.
EVERYONE HAS A ROLE TO PLAYCommissioners stressed the importance of a collective effort, urging elected officials, managers, and employees to “lean in” and contribute to the county’s financial stability.
