The South Carolina Department of Public Health reported Tuesday that there have been 89 new cases of measles identified since Friday, bringing the total number of cases in South Carolina’s Upstate outbreak to 789. The majority of measles cases in South Carolina are concentrated in Spartanburg County in the Upstate region, according to a dashboard the state’s department of public health has available online. In South Carolina, it’s obvious that lower vaccination rates are driving the current outbreak. The measles cases in South Carolina have been primarily in kids under the age of 18, with 203 cases identified in those under 5 years old, 493 cases in kids 5-17 years old, and 65 cases in those 18+. On Tuesday, the South Carolina Department of Public Health published a new list of schools where kids are currently in quarantine, and its length really drives home how rapidly this is all spreading among kids.
