Public libraries across southern Vancouver Island are feeling the squeeze as the cost of digital content continues to rise. The Greater Victoria Public Library said licensing fees for e-books and digital audiobooks have increased sharply, putting added pressure on already tight budgets. Unlike physical books, digital titles often require recurring licence renewals and can expire after a set number of loans, requiring libraries to repurchase the same content repeatedly. The issue affects communities throughout the region, including Duncan, Ladysmith and the Cowichan Valley, where demand for digital borrowing remains strong. Libraries said they are continuing to advocate for more sustainable pricing models to ensure public access to digital materials is not reduced.
