Ontario Provincial Police are reminding residents, property owners and businesses that shoveling, plowing or blowing snow onto roads is against the law. Police say depositing snow or ice on roadways goes against the Ontario Highway Traffic Act and carries a fine ranging from $60 to $1,000. Leaving snow on roads creates hazards for drivers, they add, and pedestrians alike including blocking sightlines, creating icy patches and interfering with snow plows. The OPP says it can be difficult with heavy snowfall to find a place to leave snow, but the road is never the right place. They add that residents should follow municipal guidelines for snow management.
