One more big snowstorm to look back on in our weekly history feature. Local historian Karen Bachmann says the Porcupine Mining Camp was buried under 76 centimetres – about 30 inches of snow in two days in January, 1938. Sam Mueller of the Hollinger Mine Meteorological Office said it was the biggest snowfall ever recorded in Timmins. The Timmins downtown and some of the residential streets were finally cleared out by February of that year. The rest of the areas were scheduled for a little bit later on.”CBC Radio reported that Timmins got 30 feet of snow.
