A South Jersey school district had a delayed opening Wednesday and will likely have delayed openings for the rest of this week, according to the superintendent. Toms River Regional Schools Superintendent Michael Citta announced the delayed openings in a letter to community members on Tuesday, citing safety concerns for students commuting to school in wintry conditions. “Sunday’s storm has presented unique challenges considering the volume of snow, ice and the extreme cold that accompanied it,” said Citta. “Believe me, we are doing everything we can to get all of our students back to school safely.”Citta said there are still sidewalks in the area that are not cleared after this past weekend’s nasty winter storm and the students who walk to school “deserve safe paths to school.”The district’s delayed openings for the rest of the week will depend on whether temperatures remain below freezing, Citta said. Hardyston Township School District in Sussex County also said schools would have delayed openings all week, according to a notice on the district’s website.
