The town council announced it would be putting its name in the hat for the Department for Culture, Media and Sport's quadrennial competition this week. The 2028 competition is the first of its kind across the UK and has been created to celebrate the cultural life and identity of towns, alongside the existing City of Culture series. "As part of this process, the Council will be entering the Department for Culture, Media & Sport’s national competition to find the UK’s Town of Culture 2028. Others have offered their services to help the town win the prestigious title which comes after Bradford's successful bid for UK City of Culture in 2025, beating areas like Southampton and Wrexham. "We have seen the transformative power of culture through the UK City of Culture competition.
