On Friday, April 16, 2004, my doctor called to say that I was in remission. The CAR protein helps the T cells recognize antigens found on the surface of specific cancer cells, so the T cells can target and kill the malignant cells. After the third, I felt as sick as I’ve been from any cancer treatment I’ve had. On Monday, June 26, I checked in to Mount Sinai again, this time to receive my CAR-­T treatment. When the time came, one of the nurses wheeled in an IV pole with the bag containing my CAR-T cells.
