A bomb attack perpetrated by terrorist group Al-Shabaab claimed the life of journalist Mohamed Abukar Mohamed, also known as Dabaashe, among other casualties, on 18 March in the Hamar Jajab district of Mogadishu.
The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) joins its affiliate, the National Union of Somali Journalists (NUSOJ) in condemning this heinous attack and they both mourn the death of Mohamed, who is the first journalist killed in Somalia in 2025.
Mohamed Abukar Mohamed, a freelance journalist for Sirta TV, was on his way to work when the explosion occurred.
The terrorist group Al-Shabaab claimed responsibility for the attack, which targeted a convoy in which Somalia’s President, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, was travelling in the Hamar Jajab district of Mogadishu.
IFJ General Secretary Anthony Bellanger added: “We are deeply saddened by the loss of our colleague, Mohamed Abukar Mohamed, the first journalist killed in Somalia this year.
