The National Union of Somali Journalists (NUSOJ) is raising urgent concern over a sharp rise in targeted actions against journalists in Somalia. In the first half of 2025 alone, NUSOJ documented 41 violations of media freedom, each clearly tied to journalistic work. They are designed to curtial media freedom, restrict access to information and scare others into silence. This evidence clearly shows that a change in leadership has not brought any meaningful improvement in the treatment of media freedom. These numbers highlight a harsh and troubling reality: regardless of gender, journalists in Somalia face serious risks simply for doing their jobs.
