In a major win for environmental advocates, Mexico’s Secretariat of Environment and Natural Resources (SEMARNAT) has officially revoked the permits for constructing a fourth cruise ship pier near the Villa Blanca reef in Cozumel. Environmental groups, marine biologists, and residents argued that dredging and increased maritime traffic would irreversibly damage the reef’s biodiversity and water quality. Cozumel, one of the world’s top diving destinations, relies heavily on its marine ecosystems for tourism and local livelihoods. The protection of Villa Blanca reef is seen as essential not only for environmental reasons but also for the long-term economic health of the island.
