Mexican billionaire Carlos Slim has secured a major infrastructure victory in the United States, as his construction firm Grupo FCC won a $1.76 billion contract to expand New York City’s subway system.
The project, awarded in September 2025, focuses on Phase 2 of the Second Avenue Subway Line, extending service from the Upper East Side to East Harlem.
Grupo FCC, controlled by Slim, will lead the Connect Plus Partners (Connect+) consortium alongside Halmar International, a New York-based construction firm.
The project is part of a broader $6.99 billion investment plan by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) to modernize New York’s aging transit infrastructure.
The expansion is expected to benefit over 300,000 daily passengers in Harlem and surrounding areas, marking a transformative step in New York’s public transportation future.
