— C&S Wholesale Grocers LLC has closed its $1.77 billion deal to acquire fellow grocery distributor SpartanNash Co. Including SpartanNash’s annual net sales of nearly $10 billion, C&S’ overall sales now total about $30 billion. C&S’ agreement to buy SpartanNash came about six months after the termination of the planned $24.6 billion merger of The Kroger Co. and Albertsons Cos. in December 2024, which effectively ended C&S’ deal to acquire hundreds of divested stores. In becoming part of C&S, the SpartanNash business goes from public to private. Plans call for Tony Sarsam, president and CEO of SpartanNash since September 2020, to serve as an adviser for a transitionary period with the combined company.
