Microsoft has sidestepped a massive antitrust fine from the European Union, agreeing to legally binding changes on how it sells its Teams communication software. The European Commission announced Friday it has accepted Microsoft’s commitments to unbundle Teams from its popular Microsoft 365 and Office 365 suites. The core of the commitment is the unbundling of Teams, requiring the company to provide versions of its popular Microsoft 365 and Office 365 suites at a reduced price without the communication app included. It will provide enhanced interoperability, creating better pathways for competing tools like Slack or alfaview to connect with and function within the Microsoft 365 ecosystem. Slack, now owned by Salesforce, accused Microsoft of abusing its market dominance by “illegally tying” Teams to its must-have Office software.
