Called the Agent Payments Protocol (AP2), it was announced Tuesday with backing from over 60 partners like Mastercard, PayPal, and American Express. Major payment networks like Mastercard and American Express are on board, alongside digital payment giants like PayPal. In collaboration with Coinbase and the Ethereum Foundation, Google has launched an A2A x402 extension to support agent-based crypto payments. Erik Reppel of Coinbase suggested this moves agent payments from theory to practice. By building on MCP, Google is leveraging a powerful, widely adopted standard.
