A recent study published in the Journal of Coatings Technology and Research by Haoran Wei and his team introduces a novel waterborne polyurethane (WPU) coating that exhibits both excellent antifouling and self-healing properties. The coating integrates polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and dynamic disulfide bonds, making it particularly valuable for industrial applications in challenging environments. The researchers examined the impact of PDMS and disulfide content on the coating’s thermal, mechanical, and surface properties. Thanks to its structural design, the coating demonstrated strong resistance to fouling and enabled self-healing at temperatures above 60°C, restoring mechanical properties up to 95%.
